Kingston, Jamaica:
The National Health Fund was the overall winner at the 2nd Annual Public Bodies’ Corporate Governance staged by the Private Sector Organisation of Jamaica (PSOJ) in association with the Ministry of Finance and the Public Service (MoFPS) at the Jamaica Pegasus recently.
The Annual Public Bodies Corporate Governance Awards was conceptualized to identify and reward public bodies that have established high standards of corporate governance disclosure and practices.
Minister of Finance and the Public Service Dr. Nigel Clarke who delivered the keynote address at the awards stated that “Good Corporate Governance is important because the public sector has vast resources and manages on behalf of the people, but more importantly because the legitimacy of government depends on ensuring that standards of governance are transparent and accountable and that these systems are inbuilt”
Sixteen entities competed in four award categories: Board Composition, Function and Structure, Corporate Governance Policies Procedures & Practices, Compliance and Disclosure of Information and Risk Measurement, Management and Internal Controls. There were also two special awards for Best Annual Report and Best Website.
In congratulating the awardees, the PSOJ President Howard Mitchell noted that “If we’re serious about achieving Vision 2030, the importance of public bodies being transparent and held to account by stakeholders cannot be overstated. Good governance and accountability are critical steps to be taken in reducing the deficit of trust that cripples many of the initiatives taken by the state in attempting to develop Jamaica and achieving prosperity for all.”
Jamaica Deposit Insurance Corporation, Exim Bank Ltd and Development Bank of Jamaica were among the category winners.
